International Christmas Market Essen

23rd November to 23rd December 2017

A trip to the heart of Essen from 23rd November to 23rd December is truly a must for anyone wishing to experience the magic of the holiday season. There you"ll find the International Christmas Market Essen – one of the country"s most beautiful markets, featuring over 250 festively decorated stands that will sweeten your days in the run-up to Christmas. This market is truly one-of-a-kind in Germany thanks to the Essener Lichtwochen (Essen illumination weeks), committing itself to the "Green Capital of Europe - Essen 2017" award, by using cutting-edge and elaborate lighting technology among many other things.

The market lives up to its name with its international range of products on offer. There are merchants from 20 different countries as well as from a variety of German regions, stocked with ceramics from Bunzlau, handicrafts from Africa, jewellery from the Baltic region or fashion accessories from Nepal. Chefs from far-away places travel to Essen to whip up delectable delights which can only be enjoyed at the International Christmas Market Essen. The Peruvian potato is just one example. In addition to all the exotic goods and culinary delicacies, there are also traditional Christmas gifts to be purchased on the square Willy-Brandt-Platz, all the way down the street Rathenaustraße to the Kennedyplatz square and then over to the Flachsmarkt square.

The Medieval Market was once held on the Flachsmarkt a long, long time ago. Now basket-weavers, leather-smiths and beekeepers celebrate their ancient crafts here in the light of burning torches and with lute music.

Tuesday = students" day: all students should cross off their Tuesdays during the International Christmas Market. Upon presenting their student IDs, young academics will receive a discount at all food stands or special offers.

A large burning fire, cosy rest areas and food stands await visitors at the square Kardinal-Hengsbach-Platz. Entertainment at the "Feuerwald" (Fire forest) is topped off with live music every Friday and Saturday as well as "Pink Monday" and a variety of other performances.

All kids visiting the Christmas market who want to test their skills and abilities in the areas of acrobatics, clownery, fire performance, juggling, tightrope walking and magic, can visit the interactive circus "Mach-Mit-Zirkus" for children at the square Hirschlandplatz.
